Tour Description

6 Days Mount Kenya Climb Naro Moru – Chogoria Route

The 6 Days Mount Kenya Climb Naro Moru is our most challenging Mount Kenya adventure, combining the direct Naro Moru ascent with a descent through Chogoria and an optional technical summit attempt on Batian at 5,199m.

The route passes through the Met Station and Mackinder’s Camp before reaching Austrian Hut at 4,700m, with a peak circuit and Point Lenana sunrise experience along the way. Experienced climbers can then attempt Batian, Mount Kenya’s true summit, requiring technical rock climbing, ropes, and an abseil descent from Nelion.

The additional high-altitude night provides valuable acclimatization and greater flexibility for changing mountain conditions. Park fees, full-board meals, porters, cook, treated water, English-speaking guide, and summit certificate are included.

Detailed Itinerary

Your guide meets you at the airport or your hotel for breakfast and a full briefing. You leave Nairobi by shared transport, private transfer at extra cost, and transfer to the Naro Moru park gate at 2,600m to register, where the walk begins. The track follows the crest of a broad ridge between the northern and southern Naro Moru valleys, easy going through pleasant forest, and about two-thirds of the way up past the bridge it opens north into the valley below. The day ends at the Met Station at 3,000m. Dinner and overnight.

Uphill, passing the radio mast on your right after half an hour. The track becomes a path, and thirty minutes on the forest ends and the moorland starts. This is the Vertical Bog, damp to glutinous depending on recent rain. Push through to firmer ground and the fork overlooking the Teleki Valley, then on to Mackinder’s Camp at 4,200m. Dinner and overnight.

After breakfast you climb from Mackinder’s up to Austrian Hut at 4,700m, the highest sleeping point on the mountain. Dinner and overnight at the hut.

You climb to Point Lenana at 4,985m and then complete a circuit of the peaks, which doubles as acclimatisation for tomorrow. Lunch, dinner and overnight at Austrian Hut.

The attempt on Batian at 5,199m, returning across to Nelion and abseiling down to the base, then back to Austrian Hut for lunch. You then descend the Chogoria side to the Meru Mount Kenya Bandas. Dinner and overnight at camp.

A two-hour, 15km descent to the forest clearance, where a 4×4 transfer, available at extra cost, runs you to Chogoria village to connect with transport back to Nairobi.
